This semester I am taking a VERY VERY interesting course for my minor: Networked Communities and Environments. Specifically, this course addresses the social dynamics of the Internet, how networks evolve, the social implications, the spaces in which the networks exist and so on.
For the first assignment, I was tasked with keeping a Digital Media Journal. Basically, track the amount of times I use any digital media and what kind specifically.
What I have noticed is that I use my laptop and iPhone extensively for multiple purposes. For example, I observed that each morning, I turn on my Music on my iPhone on my morning commute as well as my commutes going home. I have also noticed that I constantly check my Instagram account on my phone, at least 12 times throughout the day. I estimated that I listen to music for roughly 7 hours each day.
As well, being in a design program, I use my laptop everyday to access the Adobe software. Moreover, I do use my laptop to access the Internet. Throughout the week, I visited Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, WordPress.com, YouTube, Google, and Gmail more than 10 times. In particular, I opened Facebook everyday and will leave the webpage open for over 5 hours. I usually spend roughly 10 hours a day solely on my laptop.
Finally, I watched the television twice to watch a half-hour show and an hour show the other time. The other television shows I watched were off my computer, around 2 hours that week.
In conclusion, I have found that I have a clear dependency on both my laptop and iPhone.
Here is the video I produced for my assignment:
For my final project in Communication: Time, Motion, Media I was challenged with a task of creating a data visualization. In the assignment, I had to create a moving data visualization of a subject of your my choosing in a visually accessible form. I decided to record the number of people on Facebook chat each hour of the day for a week to see if there were any trends throughout each day.
Here are for photos of what my data visualization looks like:
I will post a YouTube video showing the interactive component to my visualization 🙂
